Box Score West Palm Beach, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team squared off with the Doane Tigers Sunday Afternoon on the first day of the West Palm Beach Classic. The Warriors came out of the gate strong but were unable to contain the Tigers, falling 90-56.
The Warriors got out to an early lead in the first quarter, as Kori Wimberly sank two free throws to start the scoring. Nina Goncalves made a layup soon after on an assist from Jaiden Ross. Triniti Lee made the next basket for Webber off the dime from Goncalves to give the Warriors a 6-2 lead. Wimberly got to work soon after, sinking a three-pointer and then a layup after a steal from Jermaisa Klopsis to put Webber ahead 11-6. Ross and Alisha Walker made the next three baskets, as Ross hit a jumper and a layup, with Walker also hitting a jumper, bringing the score to 17-12 in favor of the Warriors. Goncalves sunk a three of her own off an assist from Klopsis, before Klopsis got the final bucket of the first quarter to fall with the score tied at 22.
Lee sunk one free throw from the charity stripe to start the second quarter. Walker, Samantha Pacheco, and Ross went on a 6-0 run to give the Warriors the lead halfway through the second quarter 29-27. Lee made a jumper towards the end of the half off an assist from Pacheco to end a scoring drought for the Warriors. Heading into halftime, the Warriors trailed 46-31.
The Warriors were held scoreless throughout the beginning of the third quarter, but Walker would not be denied. She sank a jumper of an assist from Goncalves, before being fouled on her next attempt and sinking both free throws from the line, 53-35. Goncalves got a shot to fall off an assists from Ross, before Lee also made a bucket on a pass from Ross. Wimberly scored the final basket for the Warriors in the third quarter with Webber trailing 69-43.
Klopsis scored first for Webber in the fourth, as her shot fell off of the feed from Goncalves. Nellie Jackson got on the board for the Warriors with a basket off of a pass from Lee. Goncalves proceeded to go on a six-point run of her own to try and cut into the Doane lead, with her last basket making the score 81-53. Walker got into double figures with a layup before Jasmine Henry scored the final point on a free throw, as the Warriors fell to the Tigers 90-56.
Goncalves led the Warriors with 15 points. She also added five assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Walker had 10 points and five rebounds, while Wimberly added nine points and three rebounds.
The Warriors will be back in action on Monday, December 18th when they take on the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears on day two of the West Palm Beach Classic.
