Winter Haven, FL – A massive first-half effort comes up just short as the Warriors dropped to Fort Lauderdale, on Tuesday night. Webber outscored FTL 33-21 in the first 20 minutes of play, but fall to 4-1 on the season.
Tyrone Nesby IV led the Warriors with a season-high 30 points on the night, 18 of which came in the first frame. Eden Holt netted 12 points, five assists, and four steals while K'shun Stokes totaled 11 points.
Stokes started the Warriors' night off with a jumper. A great defensive possession forced a turnover, leading to two straight Nesby jumpers to increase the lead to 8-0. Fort Lauderdale responded with a bucket before Nesby and Stokes add five points together, growing Webber's lead to 12 with 14 minutes left in the half.
FTL went on a 8-5 run over the next five minutes of play to cut the WIU lead to nine. A pair of Holt layups extended the WIU lead to 25. The final three minutes of the opening half saw seven points from Nesby, while WIU netted four points of their own. Webber went into the locker room up 33-12 after 20 minutes of play.
The Warriors opened the second half with two free throws by Stokes. The Eagles went on a 8-3 run to cut the lead to five with 15:22 left in the contest. Nesby took over the next eight WIU points to keep the Warriors up by five. Four straight Holt free throws kept Webber in front before a three pointer by the Eagles tied the game with six minutes left.
Stokes netted three more points, to keep it a one-point game with three minutes remaining. A Fort Lauderdale jumper sealed the deal as the Warriors fell 64-61.
Webber will return on Saturday for a non-conference matchup at home against the John Brown Golden Eagles at 7 PM at the Polk State Gym.
