Warriors Sweep Royals in The Battle of Crooked Lake

10/11/2023 8:12:00 PM

Box Score Lake Wales, FL. - The Webber International Women's soccer team traveled across Crooked Lake to face off with their cross-town rival, Warner University, for the second time this season. After claiming the first battle against the Royals just two weeks prior in Babson Park, the Warriors took the fight to the Royals home field and defeated them 2-0 to claim the season series.

The Warriors came out of the gate hot in the first half recording four shots in the first eight minutes of action. Olof Sigurdardottir missed high in the second minute, followed by two shots from Deborah Guillen in the sixth and eighth minutes which were both saved by the Royals keeper, and Hannah Esson missed wide in the seventh minute as well. Less than a minute later, Abie LaRocca would get the Warriors on the board first with her fourth goal of the season on the assist from Maddie Manzke, and one goal would not be enough for LaRocca as she scored her second goal of the game, fifth of the season, just 40 seconds later on the pass from Leah McDaid to give the Warriors a two goal lead less than 10 minutes into the game. The Warriors would take 15 shots in the first half compared to the Royals five, along with three corner kicks to zero for the Royals. Cameron Laine had a very nice half of play in net for the Warriors recording four saves and keeping a clean sheet going into halftime. The Warriors would take their 2-0 lead into halftime on the back of LaRocca's two back-to-back goals early on in the half.

The second half was a battle befitting the rivalry between the crooked lake rivals. The Warriors would collect nine second half fouls, including three yellow cards, and the Royals would commit six of their own fouls while collecting two yellow cards in the last 45 minutes of action. Laine would record another four saves to get her to eight saves on the day to stave off the Royals attackers. While the second half was much more competitive and even between both squads, the Warriors were able to play more defensive with their two goal first half lead and coasted to a 2-0 victory on the road against their sun conference rivals.

The Warriors will be back at home this Saturday, October 14th at 3:30 PM as they will face off against #17 St. Thomas University for the second time this season.
