Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors Top Thomas in Low-Scoring Affair

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 7, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team picked up their third win in a row and back-to-back Sun Conference victories after defeating the visiting Night Hawks of Thomas University, 50-43, on Saturday afternoon.

It was a defensive game as there were only 93 points scored between both sides. The Warriors (5-11 overall, 2-4 SUN) held Thomas (1-14, 0-7) to just 20.3 percent from the field while also forcing them into a total of 17 turnovers. Webber capitalized with 15 points off turnovers and outscored the Night Hawks in the paint, 26-10.

Thomas would pick up the first basket of the game as it went on an early 8-2 run over the first three minutes or so. The Warriors trailed by seven with just under six minutes left in the quarter before a 6-0 run trimmed the deficit to just one. The Night Hawks extended their lead to 15-12 with just under three minutes left and neither team managed a bucket for the remainder of the quarter.

It was a slow second quarter for both teams offensively with just a combined 18 points scored. Thomas steadily increased its lead to as many as nine at 25-16 with roughly three and a half minutes until halftime. Dasia Wandick then scored two baskets in a row, making it a five-point game at the break.

At the start of the second half, the Warriors began chipping away at the Night Hawks lead. Webber tied the game up on two different occasions; first at 27, and the again at 29. Unable to take the lead, however, the Warriors trailed 36-33 heading into the final quarter of action.

Following two successful free throws by Jaida Burgess which cut Thomas' lead to one, a steal from Jermasia Klopsis led to a layup by Samantha Pacheco which earned the Warriors their first lead of the game. Webber then continued to build on their lead, making it a 10-0 run after the first four minutes. The Warriors' seven-point lead was later cut to just three, but that is as close as the Night Hawks came as Webber extended it lead yet again to seal its third-straight victory.

Burgess and Alisha Walker led the way offensively with 14 points each. Burgess recorded her fourth double-double of the season after tallying a career-high 13 rebounds and also added a team-high four assists as well. Both Walker and Alexandria Lemmon finished with seven rebounds in total, followed by Danshelle Mickel with four. Pacheco had eight points, three assists, and a team-high three steals on the day followed by Wandick with seven points, a block, and a steal.

The Warriors will now have a four-day break before hosting the Lions of Florida Memorial University who currently sit in first place in The Sun Conference. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 12th, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
