BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 13, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team matched up against Florida Memorial University for the first time this season on Thursday evening. The Warriors were unable to keep up with the high-octane offense of the Lions as they fell 95-66 on their home court.
Florida Memorial (12-5 overall, 7-1 SUN) shot a very impressive 51.5 percent from the floor while also outscoring the Warriors (5-12, 2-5) 48-26 on points in the paint. Both teams had an equal number of turnovers, however, the Lions capitalized more often as they had 22 points off turnovers compared to Webber's 11.
Triniti Lee scored the first six points for the Warriors, converting both of her first two shots from deep as Webber took an early 6-2 lead after the opening three and a half minutes. The Lions took the lead for the first time roughly a minute later at 7-6. A layup by
Jaida Burgess regained the lead for the Warriors but it was taken away once again on the next possession. From that point on, Florida Memorial never gave up their lead for the remainder of the game.
The Lions had built up an eight-point lead heading into the second quarter and picked up right where they left off as they extended their lead to as many as 16 points at halftime.
Florida Memorial produced its highest scoring output in the third quarter as it tallied 28 points in total. The Lions kept their foots on the gas, extending their advantage to as many as 31 points before a layup by
Dasia Wandick just before the buzzer, made it a 29-point game heading into the final quarter.
The Warriors cut back into the deficit slightly but in the end, the Lions were able to maintain their position at the top of The Sun Conference standings with a victory.
Burgess led the team in both points (24) and assists (3), while also adding five rebounds and two steals. Lee tallied four rebounds but it was Wandick that led the team with seven rebounds in total, to go along with her nine points.
Alexandria Lemmon and
Alisha Walker both posted six points apiece. Lee picked up a team-high four blocks, making her fifth in the NAIA for blocks per game with 2.7.
Webber will be back in action on Saturday, January 14 when they travel to face St. Thomas University at 2 p.m. The Warriors will then host the Crooked Lake rivalry on Thursday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m.
