Men's Basketball Cruises Past Suns, 91-67

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 29, 2023) - The Webber International University men's basketball team played host to the Johnson University - Florida Suns on Saturday evening in a non-conference matchup. The Warriors started out a little slow but made light work of the Suns in the end in a 91-67 victory.

The Warriors (15-7 overall) shot 45.1 percent from the floor and dominated down low as they outscored the Suns 42-26 on points in the paint. Webber did well defensively to hold them to 34.3 percent shooting in total and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.

It was a little bit of a slow start for the Warriors as they trailed 7-4 after the opening three minutes or so but a 12-0 run over the next five and a half minutes earned them a 16-7 lead. Webber never relinquished its advantage for the rest of the game. A first-half double-double from Jordan Golden fueled the Warriors to extending their lead to 23 at the halftime break. K'Shun Stokes, Eddie Davis, and Golden all reached double-digit scoring in just the first half.

The Suns kept pace with Webber in the second half, but never threatened to reduce the lead and get themselves back into the game. A total of 13 Warriors touched the court in this one, including Gabriel Mendes who tallied two points, two rebounds, and a block in five minutes of action. Jovon Rosse recorded two points, an assist and a rebound in 11 minutes of action as well.

Webber was led by Stokes who led the team with 17 points and came one rebound away from a double-double with nine. Golden finished with 12 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, and a block as well. Davis and Chinecherem Anukaenyi both ended the game with 15 points. Anukaenyi added seven rebounds and shot 85.7 percent from the floor, he was one-point shy of his career-high of 16. Tiyon Martin led the team with five assists and added eight points to his credit.

That was the final non-conference game of the season for the Warriors as they will now have to travel to Keiser University on Thursday, February 2nd, for a game against the Seahawks at 7:30 p.m. Later in the week, Webber returns home to take on Southeastern University on Saturday, February 4th at 4 p.m. in what will be a Blackout Game in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
