LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 29, 2023) - After an opening-day victory on its home field, the Webber International University baseball team traveled just down the road to face Warner University in game two of a home-and-away against its rival to start the year. The Warriors' bats were hot in this one as they dominated the Royals, 11-1 in seven innings.
The Warriors (2-0 overall) held the Royals (0-2) to just one run scored as
Blayne Huter made his Warrior-debut on the mound. Huter threw 4.0 innings posting four strikeouts and just one run on three hits.
Casey Lawson pitched an inning and tallied a punch-out while
Ivan Martinez-Suarez closed out the final two innings in his debut, recording two strikeouts and just one hit conceded.
It did not take long for Webber to break the game open as in the top of the second inning, a walk followed by a hit by pitch and another walk, loaded the bases with one out. A single to right field by
Richard Rodriguez brought home the first two runs of the game, scoring
Tavion Williams and
Kris Allen.
Drake Dobyanski singled in the very next at-bat to load the bases yet again.
Luis Acevedo stepped up to the plate and delivered a grand slam to earn the Warriors a 6-0 lead. Acevedo homered just once in 62 games played last season and has kicked off 2023 with home runs in back-to-back games to start the year. Webber earned one more run in the inning after
Angel Diaz doubled to left field and subsequently scored on an error by the catcher.
The Royals earned their only run of the game in the bottom of the second on a pass ball.
The Warriors picked up two more runs in the third inning thanks to back-to-back sacrifice flies from
Jakob Jackson and R. Rodriguez. Back-to-back singles to lead of the top of the fourth by Acevedo and
Tyren Milliner put runners on the corners with nobody out. An error by the left fielder brought home Acevedo and later in the inning, a fielder's choice by Allen scored A. Diaz to increase the lead to 10.
Webber was led by Acevedo who went 2-for-5 with a home run, four RBI's, and two runs scored. R. Rodriguez capped his first appearance of the season going 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Morales went 2-for-3 as well in his debut as a Warrior and scored a run as well. A. Diaz, Allen, and Jackson all tallied an RBI each while A. Diaz and Allen both recorded two runs scored.
Next up, the Warriors return home to matchup against another inner-league opponent in a non-conference game, this time in the form of Ave Maria University. The game is set for Tuesday, January 31st at 6 p.m. on Brad Niethammer Field.
