Five Warriors Combine for No-Hitter Against Gyrenes

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 31, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team returned home to play host to Ave Maria University on Brad Niethammer Field on Tuesday night. The Warriors had five-pitchers, led by Dylan Martin, combine for a no-hitter in a 9-2 victory over the Gyrenes.

The Warriors (3-0 overall) earned their third-straight victory to open the 2023 season against the Gyrenes (3-1), who were coming off of a three-game sweep of Thomas University.

2022 First-Team All-Conference selection, Dylan Martin, started on the hill for Webber as he threw five scoreless innings with three strikeouts en route to his first win of the season. Four Warriors pitched an inning each over the course of the final four innings including Ivan Martinez-Suarez, Thomas Lopez Jr., Thomas Nelson, and Dawson Young. Martinez-Suarez gave up the two runs in the sixth inning but the four were able to keep the Gyrenes hitless.

Webber opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Drake Dobyanski was hit by a pitch to bring home the first run of the game followed by a Luis Acevedo-walk which brought home another. A wild pitch by Ave Maria scored a third and Dobyanski then crossed home plate on a fielder's choice by Angel Diaz, giving the Warriors a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors scored three more in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead after a two-run shot by Brodey Neveker. The Gyrenes would later walk home another run in the inning to make it 7-2. Two more runs crossed in the eighth inning on two RBI-singles, first from Acevedo and then from Kris Allen.

Acevedo finished 2-for-3 on the night with two RBI's and two walks. Allen was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base as well. Neveker ended 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI's, two runs scored while Tavion Williams led the team with three runs scored. Tommy Diaz was disciplined at the plate, going 1-for-2 with three drawn walks.

The Warriors will now prepare for a four-game series against the University of South Carolina Beaufort beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, February 3rd, at 4 and 7 p.m. They will follow that up with another doubleheader the very next day at 12 and 3 p.m.
