MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 15, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team traveled to the Fernandez Family Center on Saturday afternoon for a matchup against St. Thomas University. The Warriors took a lead in the fourth quarter but came up short in the end as they fell to the Bobcats, 80-75.
The Warriors (5-13 overall, 2-6 SUN) had no shortage of opportunities as they forced St. Thomas (15-5, 6-2) into a whopping 27 turnovers, in which they turned into 33 points off turnovers. The Bobcats were more efficient offensively, however, as hey shot 45.8 percent from the floor, compared to the 39.4 of Webber.
It was an even first quarter of action that was led by
Alexandria Lemmon and
Alisha Walker who tallied seven and six points respectively. Tied at 21 to begin the second quarter, the Warriors played aggressively on defense as St. Thomas committed nine turnovers. Webber was unable to capitalize, however, as it shot just 26.7 percent in total for the quarter. The Bobcats developed a lead of as many as five points but took a 37-33 advantage at the break.
St. Thomas kept the pressure on to begin the second half as they continued to build on their lead to as many as 12 points with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. A 14-4Â run by the Warriors over the remainder of he quarter saw them cut the deficit from 12 to just two points entering the final quarter of play. A layup by
Dasia Wandick followed by three successful free throws from
Samantha Pacheco earned the Warriors their first lead since the second quarter at 62-59. The Bobcats tied the game at 65 a few minutes later before riding the momentum to a 7-0 run that earned them the lead, 72-65. Webber was able to cut the deficit to just four points on two separate occasions but St. Thomas did well to sustain their lead and earn the victory.
Jaida Burgess led the Warriors in both points with 17 and assists with five, which ties her season-high. She was followed by Lemmon with 12 points, three rebounds, and tied with Pacheco for the team-high in steals with three. Both Pacheco and
Alisha Walker ended the game with 11 points scored. Pacheco tallied three assists while Walker led the team in rebounds with seven.
Triniti Lee came off the bench to contribute nine points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
The Warriors now return home to battle their Crooked Lake rival on Thursday, January 19th at 5:30 p.m. before heading back on the road as they travel to Ave Maria University for their second matchup of the year against the Gyrenes. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st at 2 p.m.
