LAURINBURG, N.C. (September 5, 2022) – In what was its second match in three days, the Webber International University men's soccer team traveled to St. Andrews University for its first road matchup of the season on Monday morning. Just one goal would separate the two sides but it would be the Warriors who came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
Â
Both teams had a relatively equal number of shots with the Warriors (3-0 overall) having the slight edge, 15-12. However, Webber would double the number of shots on goal with 10 compared to the five of the Knights (2-1 overall).
Â
St. Andrews would put pressure on the Warrior's goal early on in the match, taking five shots in the first 20 minutes. Two of those shots would be saved by goalkeeper
Gianni Honsel and another would be cleared off the line by
Eric Longhorn, keeping the game level. Webber would get its first effort in the 22nd minute after a shot would go high over the bar from
Marc Bonafe. Just four minutes later, Bonafe would come ever so close to the opening goal after another shot would rattle off the post.
Â
In the 26th minute,
Luke Piveral would sub into the game for
Dozie Ozo-Udeze. Piveral would make an impact off the bench, scoring the first and only goal of the match just 11 minutes after being subbed on. The rest of the first half would be all Warriors as they would have multiple efforts on goal, but would be unable to extend their lead.
Â
The second half would start with more of the same as Webber would earn a penalty kick just one minute in. The Knights goalkeeper would make the save to keep them within one goal. The Warriors would keep the pressure on, forcing him to make five more saves over the next eight minutes of play.
Â
The Warriors would keep St. Andrews at bay for the remainder of the second half, clinging to their one-goal advantage and handing the Knights their first loss of the season.
Â
Next up, Webber will travel for the second match in-a-row, this time to Mount Vernon, Georgia as they take on Brewton-Parker College next Monday, September 12, at 4 p.m. The Warriors hosted the Barons last season and came away with a 4-0 victory.
