BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 3, 2022) - The Webber International University men's soccer team hosted the Knights of Middle Georgia State University on Saturday afternoon on he Warrior Grass Field. The Warriors displayed their offensive dominance, finding the back of the net four times, in a decisive 4-1 victory.
The Warriors (2-0-0 overall) kept up the offensive pressure for the majority of the game, peppering the opposing goal with 24 total shots, 10 of which were on target. Comparatively, the Knights (0-2-0 overall) were held to just eight shots, only two of which were on goal.
Webber would draw first blood in the 26th minute after a ball from
Marc Bonafe would find the foot of
Alon Firdman who would slot it past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season in his Warrior-debut. Roughly 10 minutes later, a ball over the top from senior
Eric Longhorn would be mishandled by an MGSU-defender and take a bounce over the keeper's head and into the net for an own-goal, gifting the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Webber would hold the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the 67th minute, a mistake from the Warriors at the back would lead to an opportunity for the Knights inside the box. A late sweeping tackle would lead to a foul and a penalty kick for MGSUÂ that would be converted, cutting the lead in half. Less than two minutes later,
Joseph O'Sullivan would run onto a beautifully weighted through ball from
Sebastian Lago and fire it into the back of the net to restore the two-goal advantage for the Warriors.
With less than four minutes left in the game, Bonafe would assist another goal, this time to Lago who would power it into the side netting to hand Webber a 4-1 lead and put the game beyond all doubt.
Bonafe would lead the team in both shots (6) and shots on goal (4) but would be unable to get on the score sheet. He would still prove to be a playmaker, tallying two assists for the match. He was followed by O'Sullivan who ended with four total shots. Lago also displayed his playmaking ability going forward from defense with a goal and an assist. Transfer-goalkeeper
Gianni Honsel spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors, only needing to make one save as the back line of
Giovanni Galeb,
Leonardo Torcigliani, Longhorn, and Lago proved to be very solid once again.
"It was a great team win for us today, but we still have a lot that we can improve on," said Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "We will look to make some adjustments and hopefully we will see them come to fruition against St. Andrews. Go Warriors!"
The Warriors have just one day off as they will now turn around and travel to Laurinburg, North Carolina to face St. Andrews University on Monday, September 5th, at 10 a.m. Both teams will look to remain unbeaten as St. Andrews is 2-0 after defeating SCAD-Savannah and Washington Adventist University.
