Box Score 4 MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (September 3, 2022) - The Webber International University women's volleyball team traveled to Georgia for a total of four matches and would return home with four 3-0 victories after not dropping a single set the whole weekend. The Warriors would play two matches on Friday at Middle Georgia State University and two matches on Saturday at Brewton-Parker College.
"This weekend was great for my team," said Head Coach
Allyson Moorman. "We had tremendous energy on and off the court and just played our game. When we were down, they never panicked. Now we have the winning mindset we need heading into our first home game. The girls are so excited for our home-opener on Monday."
In the first match on Friday, the Warriors (6-4 overall) would take down Wesleyan College (0-1 overall) by a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-23). Webber would end with a total of 44 kills on .268% hitting compared to the 24 kills on .084% hitting of the Wolves.
The Warriors would fall behind in set number one 8-6 before a 6-0 run would give them a 12-8 advantage. Webber would maintain the lead and score four-straight points to end the set that included two kills from
Alexis Turner and one from
Bailey Sikkema. Webber would take control in the second set, taking an early lead and never looking back to earn the win in set number two and go up 2-0 in the match. Wesleyan would not go down easily, taking an early 6-2 lead over the Warriors in set three. Trailing by three at 15-12, back-to-back kills from
Tanasha Cooksey and
Hannah McCarty, would kick-start a 5-0 run that would give Webber a 17-15 lead. With the Wolves leading 19-18, a 4-0 run from the Warriors followed by three-straight scores from Wesleyan would see the set tied at 22. However, Webber would do enough to see out the set three victory and complete the sweep.
Leading the way offensively was junior-transfer Turner with nine kills followed by Savannah Wilhite with eight and
Teodora Ranitovic with seven. Wilhite would also end with a very impressive .800 hitting percentage.
Amanda Vega would lead the team with 13 assists followed by
Paysee Crow with 12.
Andrea Padilla would end the match with three aces followed by
Kiersten Tisdale with two. On the defensive end,
Bailey Berger would gather 19 total digs followed by Tisdale with 16 and
Ana Clara Araujo and Sikkema each with nine.
In match number two, Webber would defeat the Knights of Middle Georgia State (0-2 overall), 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-8).
Set one would prove to be quite competitive with momentum swings in either direction. With the Knights holding a 16-11 lead, the Warriors would then go on an 11-1 run to go up 22-17. MGSUÂ would then score three-straight but it would be too little too late as Webber would take set one, 25-23. Once again, the Knights would carry a slight advantage over the course of the second set, eventually holding a three-point lead at 19-16. But the Warriors would then catch fire, scoring nine-straight points, including three aces from Vega, to end the set. The victory in set two would knock the wind out of the sails of MGSUÂ and the Warriors would see out a straight-forward set number three, 25-8, to earn the win.
Turner would lead Webber in both kills (11) and hitting percentage (.526) for the match. She would be followed by
Cintia Lorena and Sikkema who each finished with six. Leading the team in assists would be Vega with 17, while also tallying six aces, the second-most in a single match of her career (9). Defensively, Berger would rack up 18 digs while Ranitovic gathered four total blocks for the match, followed by Cooksey with three.
Webber would then travel to Mount Vernon, Georgia on Saturday where they would first take down Brewton-Parker (0-6 overall), 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-18). The Warriors were locked in offensively, outhitting the Barons .309 percent compared to .122 percent.
The Barons would lead early on, 5-3, but an 11-3 run from the Warriors would earn them a six-point lead at 14-8. That would put Webber into the driver's seat for the remainder of the first set, handing it a 25-14 victory to go up 1-0. Set two would be the closest of the three, seeing the two teams tied at 15 before seven-straight points from the Warriors that included three kills from Lorena would put them ahead, 22-15. A kill from Ranitovic followed by another kill from Lorena would put Webber at game-point before an attack error from the Barons would end the set. The Warriors would hold control in set three taking an early 5-0 lead and eventually extending it to 12-4. Webber would be up 23-11 and Brewton-Parker would try to battle back but would stave off the comeback effort and complete yet another sweep.
Lorena would lead the team in kills with 12 on .526 percent hitting followed by Turner with nine and Ranitovic and Sikkema each with eight. Vega would lead the team yet again in assists with 21 while also gathering five digs. Ranitovic would end with three total blocks while Berger and Tisdale would both end with nine digs each.
The Warriors would then round out their four-match road trip with another 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-21) victory over the Carolina University Bruins (4-3 overall).
Next up, Webber returns home for its home-opener on Monday, September 5th, where it will take on Trinity Baptist College at 5 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors will then host a tri-match that will include games against Florida National University at 4 p.m. and Florida College at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 8th.
