SAVANNAH, Ga. (September 25, 2022) - The Webber International University men's soccer team traveled to the Savannah College of Art and Design to battle the Bees in its first Sun Conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon. It was a tight contest, but the Warriors would come out on top with a 2-1 victory to increase their win streak to six games.
Both teams had nearly an equal number of scoring opportunities with the Warriors (6-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 SUN) having the slight edge, 11-10, in shots on goal.
The Bees (2-6-0, 0-1-0) drew first blood just over 13 minutes into the match. The shot made it just past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper and SCAD took the early 1-0 lead. There was scoring opportunities from both sides over the next 20 minutes or so, but in the 34th minute, the Warriors would score the equalizer through
Joseph O'Sullivan. Webber would fire off three more shots before the end of the half, all of which would be saved by the SCAD goalie however and the score remained tied at the break.
Just one minute into the second half,
Marc Bonafe would score to give the Warriors their first lead of the match. The goal would be followed by a flurry of goal scoring opportunities for the Bees as they rifled off seven shots over the next 11 or so minutes, two of which were saved and one of which ricocheted off the post. There was chances for both teams over the remainder of the match but the Warriors defense would stand strong to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
O'Sullivan and Bonafe each had a solo-goal in the match while
Fabricio Verdun would make a total of nine saves, tying his career high.
Next up, the Warriors return home for back-to-back home games as they first take on Southeastern University on Wednesday, September 28th, at 3:30 p.m. before facing rivals Warner University in the second leg of the Crooked Lake Cup on Saturday, October 1st, at 10 a.m.
