Warriors Sail Past Mariners for First Conference Victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 21, 2022) - The Webber International University women's volleyball team hosted the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners on Wednesday night for its second Sun Conference match of the season. The Warriors were in full control from start to finish as they completed the sweep, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-13).

The Warriors (11-5 overall, 1-1 SUN) offense looked like a well-oiled machine as they finished the match with 38 total kills and a hitting percentage of .306. They held the Mariners (7-7, 0-2)  to a hitting percentage of just .123 on the night.

It was a competitive start to the match as Coastal Georgia would take an 8-7 lead to begin the first set. A 12-3 run from the Warriors earned them a commanding 19-11 lead. The run was led mainly by Cintia Lorena and Alexis Turner with multiple kills and that fueled Webber to a 25-17 victory in set number one. After starting the second set down one at 5-4, a kill and an ace from Bailey Sikkema followed by two kills from Turner and one by Teodora Ranitovic, the Warriors would take the lead, 9-5. The Mariners would later tie the set up at 10 apiece, but Webber would score six-straight to regain a 16-10 advantage. Coastal Georgia would be unable to string consecutive scores together to close the gap and the Warriors would take set two, 25-15.

The Warriors took an early lead in the third set and never looked back. Webber's serving was lethal, as there was a total of 10 service aces in just the final set alone. Five of those aces came from Kiersten Tisdale, three by Bailey Berger, and two from Sikkema.

"The team was not happy about losing that last match," said Head Coach Allyson Moorman. "We want people to talk about us instead of overlooking us and I definitely think the team made a statement tonight. We had a great week of practices and we came into today's match ready to play. I love the drive this team has and I look forward to seeing what more we can accomplish."

Sikkema led the Warriors with 10 kills, hitting double-digits for the sixth time this season. She was followed by Lorena with eight, Ranitovic and Turner each with seven, and Savannah Wilhite with five. Amanda Vega and Paysee Crow continue to split setting duty as they ended the match with 14 and 13 assists respectively. Tisdale tied her career-high of seven service aces in a single match while Berger, Sikkema, and Vega all had three. Ranitovic led the team with four total blocks and Berger had a team-high 10 digs.

Webber will now travel to South Florida to take on Florida National University for the second time this season in what will be its final non-conference matchup of the season on Friday, September 23rd at 6:30 p.m. The Warriors then return to Sun Conference action the following day as they face Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida at 2 p.m.
