Women's Soccer Wins Seven-Goal Thriller in Home-Opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 19, 2022) - The Webber International University women's soccer team took on the Life University Running Eagles in its 2022 home-opener and won in dramatic fashion to extend the win streak to five matches. The Warriors would score a goal in the final minute to earn their first home-victory of the season.

Life (1-3-1 overall) would outnumber Webber (5-0-0) in number of total shots, 16-8, but the Warriors would be more accurate with their efforts on goal having six shots on target compared to the five of the Running Eagles.

The match would start out fairly even with Life having slightly more shots through the first half hour. The deadlock was broken in the 33rd minute when one of the Life attackers sent a misfired cross into the box that would actually find its way into the top left-hand corner of the goal, handing the Running Eagles a 1-0 lead. Roughly eight minutes later, the Warriors equalized thanks to a ball over the top from Kayle De Leon that found Brazil Clark who slot it past the keeper on her left foot. The two teams would go into the halftime break tied at 1-1.

The offense from both sides would pick up in the second half with Life regaining the lead in the 61st minute. Just one minute after the restart, Domenica Pena would be awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. She would step up to the spot and rifle it over the head of the keeper, off the bottom of the crossbar, and into the back of the net to tie the match up for a second time. In the 64th minute, the Warriors would have yet another scoring opportunity as Lucia De La Llera played a perfectly weighted through ball to B. Clark who used her right foot this time to nutmeg the goalie for her second of the day. The goal put Webber out in front, 3-2, with its first lead of the match.

However, the Warriors would hold that lead for just 11 seconds as a solo goal from the Running Eagles would tie the match up yet again. It would also be the fourth goal in just a four-minute span between both teams. With one minute remaining in the match, Hannah Vigotty would make an outstanding tackle on the Warriors half of the field and then lump forward a ball that would find Pena who was able to burst forward and score a one-on-one with the goalie to earn Webber the lead and the victory.

The Warriors were led by B. Clark and Pena who both had two goals each. It would be the first two goals of the season for Pena and it would be the fifth and sixth goals of the season for B. Clark. De Leon, De La Llera, and Vigotty all tallied an assist as well.

Webber now has a short break as it hosts the second of four-straight home matches on Friday, September 23rd, at 4 p.m. against the Falcons of Flroida College. The Warriors then complete non-conference play with a match against Florida National University on Tuesday, September 27th, at 1 p.m.
