BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 23, 2022) – The Webber International University women's soccer team kept its win-streak alive by the skin of its teeth with a late goal over the Florida College Falcons on Friday afternoon on the Warrior Grass Field.
Â
The Warriors (6-0-0 overall) had plenty of opportunities to score, firing off 18 total shots, but would struggle to get them on target, having just five shots on goal. The Falcons (4-5-1) had just eight total shots but almost an equal number of shots on target with four for the match.
Â
Florida College would have the first scoring opportunity just under eight minutes into the game, but a good save from
Cameron Laine would keep it out of the back of the net. In the 15th minute, a shot from midfielder
Deborah Guillen would go wide and just one minute later, a shot from
Kayle De Leon would be saved by the Falcon goalie.
Â
Webber fired off multiple shots throughout the remainder of the half, but they would be off-target and the match remained scoreless.
Â
The first 15 minutes of the second half would be all Warriors as they had six shots and three corners in that timeframe. Three of those shots would be on target but the goalkeeper for Florida College would be equal to them. Shots from either side became few and far between but in the 80th minute, the deadlock would be broken. The Warriors earned a corner kick and junior
Becky Wilkins would curl one into the box that floated over the goalkeeper's head and into the top-right hand corner of the goal. Webber would take a 1-0 lead and stand strong defensively for the final 10 minutes of the match.
Â
The lone goal of the match was Wilkins' first goal of the season. Laine spent all 90 minutes in between the sticks and tallied four saves along the way. She also earned her fourth shutout of the season.
Hannah Esson,
Hannah Vigotty, and Marta Galvao also played the whole match, solidifying a back line that helped earn the clean sheet.
Â
Next up, the Warriors take on Florida National University in what will be their final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, September 27th, at 1 p.m. on the Warrior Grass Field.
