Women's Soccer Shuts Out Pikeville 2-0

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (September 11, 2022) - The Webber International University women's soccer team took on the University of Pikeville Bears for its second match in as many days. The Warriors earned their fourth-straight victory after a 2-0 victory on Sunday morning.

The Warriors (4-0 overall) were clicking on all cylinders offensively as they peppered the Pikeville (3-3 overall) goal with 15 shots on goal. While defensively, Webber allowed just three shots on goal, all of which were saved.

In the 14th minute, the Bears would commit a foul in their own box, awarding the Warriors a penalty kick. Transfer-midfielder Lucia De La Llera stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty kick, handing Webber a 1-0 lead. The Warriors had a number of opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, but the score would remain 1-0 at the halftime break.

Although the Warriors would be creating the majority of opportunities in the match, the second goal would not come until the 70th minute. A solo-effort from Deborah Guillen would increase the lead to 2-0. It was Guillen's second goal of the season and she has now scored in back-to-back matches. Webber's defense would hold strong for the remainder of the match, sealing the shutout victory and earning its fourth-straight victory to open the season.

The Warriors now have a week-long break before hosting the Life University Running Eagles for their home-opener on Monday, September 19th, at 4 p.m. After opening the season with four road matches, Webber will now have four home games in a row as they look to keep the win streak going.
