Big Second Half Fuels Warriors Past D-III Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 28, 2022) - The Webber International University women's soccer team earned its second victory in three days to start the 2022 season after defeating Division-III Birmingham-Southern, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Following their 1-0 victory over Brewton-Parker College on Friday, the Warriors (2-0 overall) traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to face the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern (0-1).

The Panthers would strike first with the only goal of the first half, via a penalty kick just over eight minutes into the match. BSC would hold its one goal lead throughout the remainder of the first half. The Warriors would come out of the halftime break strong, as less than three minutes into the second half, Brazil Clark would find the back of the net off of a pass from Hayden Rupe. Roughly eight minutes later, Rupe would go from provider to goal scorer as she would gift Webber a 2-1 lead.

In the 59th minute, a pass from Hannah Esson would find Faith Cullen-Cooper who would fire it past the keeper to double the Warriors' lead. Birmingham-Southern would pull back within one after a goal in the 64th minute. Just under five minutes later, the Warriors would restore their two-goal advantage by way of sophomore-midfielder Lucia De La Llera. Webber would take a 4-2 lead and solid defense for the remainder of the second half would see them take the victory over the Panthers.

The Warriors would have four different goal scorers in the match, with B. Clark getting her second goal in as many games to start the season. Rupe would lead the way offensively with a goal and an assist. It would be the first goals of the season for Rupe, Cullen-Cooper, and De La Llera.

Webber now has a roughly two week break before its next match which will take place on Saturday, September 10th, when they travel to take on Ohio Christian University before then traveling to Kentucky to battle the University of Pikeville Bears the very next day, Sunday, September 11th.
