PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 27, 2022) - The Webber International University women's volleyball team traveled to Illinois for the TIU/TCC Tournament Tussle, hosted by both Trinity International University and Trinity Christian College. The Warriors played a total of four matches, two on Friday and two on Saturday, finishing with a 1-3 record for the tournament.
The two matches on Friday took place in Deerfield, Illinois at Trinity International, the first of which was against Judson University (5-1 overall). The Warriors (1-4 overall) fell in its first match 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 25-13).
Webber picked up a victory in set number two to even the match at 1-1. A tight loss in the third set would hand Judson a 2-1 advantage before the Eagles would cruise to a win in set four to seal the victory.
Bailey Sikkema would lead the Warriors in kills with 11 followed closely by
Cintia Lorena with 10.
Amanda Vega and
Paysee Crow would play the role of supplier, tallying 19 and 12 assists respectively. Defensively,
Tanasha Cooksey and Lorena would each collect two total blocks while
Bailey Berger would lead the team in digs with nine followed byÂ
Nadia Reid and Sikkema each with seven.
The Warriors would face the University of Michigan-Dearborn (2-2 overall) in game two of Friday, suffering defeat 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 25-14). The first two sets would prove to be very competitive, although UMD would squeak out victories in both, earning a 2-0 advantage. With their backs against the wall, a 6-1 run in the middle of set number three would propel the Warriors to an 18-12 lead that they would turn into a 25-17 victory to cut the deficit in half. The Wolverines would regain control of the match in the fourth set to see out the first win of their season. Reid would lead the team offensively with 12 total kills while Crow tallied a team-high 11 assists followed by Vega with seven. Berger would lead the way in digs with 15 followed by
Kiersten Tisdale and Reid with eight apiece.
Saturday's matches would be hosted by Trinity Christian, however, the Warriors' first match of the day would be against Trinity International (5-1 overall). The Trojans would go on to sweep Webber, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-14). The Warriors would struggle offensively, hitting just .079 percent, compared to the .309 percent of Trinity International. Cooksey and Lorena would lead the team in kills each with five while Sikkema and Savannah Wilhite would both finish with two total blocks. Vega would lead the team in assists with eight followed by Crow with six and Sikkema would tally a team-high 11 digs.
Webber would round out the tournament with its fourth and final match against Trinity Christian (1-5 overall). The Warriors would sweep the Trolls 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17) to earn their first win of the 2022 season as well as the first win under new Interim Head Coach
Allyson Moorman. It was a well-rounded performance that would be led by Sikkema, who would finish with 11 kills and 11 digs to record her first double-double of the season. Vega and Crow would both end the match earning double-digit assists with 18 and 15 respectively. Berger would post three aces and nine digs while Wilhite would end with a game-high four total blocks.
Up next, the Warriors return to Florida but will travel to Temple Terrace to take on the Falcons of Florida College on Tuesday, August 30th, at 7 p.m. in the Conn Gymnasium.
