LEWISTON, Idaho (May 28, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team matched up against No. 15 Faulkner University in what was its first World Series game in program history. The Warriors struggled offensively in a 7-2 defeat to the Eagles.
Dylan Martin would start on the mound for the Warriors (41-21), throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs, three of which were earned, on six hits and four walks while striking out five.
Praxie Vigil,
Rey Rodriguez, and
Thomas Lopez Jr. would combine to relieve the final 4.1 innings.
Faulkner's (38-17) starting pitcher, Sosa, would throw a complete game, tossing nine innings and allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out 12 in total.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles would kick off the scoring with a three-run inning that included two sacrifice flies. A solo home run from Faulkner in the next inning would increase the lead to 4-0. The Eagles would tack on two more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double to right center followed by an RBI-single to center to stretch the lead to six. That lead would increase yet further in the bottom of the seventh when another run would cross for Faulkner on a wild pitch. The Warriors would be held scoreless until the top of the ninth inning when
Drake Dobyanski would fire a two-run home run over the wall in right field, scoring
Gabriel Dorsey and cutting the lead to five. It would be too little too late, however, as Faulkner would hold off any attempts of a comeback to seal the 7-2 victory.
The Warriors now await the loser between Westmont College and tournament-hosts Lewis-Clarke State College. Webber plays their next matchup on Sunday, May 28, at 6 p.m. eastern.
