LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (April 6, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team matched up against top-25 opposition for the fourth time so far this season, this time in the form of No. 15 Georgia Gwinnett. The Warriors split with the hosting Grizzlies after falling in game one 11-0 after five innings followed by a tight 2-0 victory in game two.
Jenna Chaudoin would start on the mound for the Warriors (27-12 overall) in game one but would struggle after allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits in her two innings of action. She would be relieved by
Morgan Mills who would pitch the following two innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits and tallied one strikeout.
The Grizzlies (26-13) would score their first runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-0 lead. Georgia Gwinnett would tack on four more runs the very next inning to extend the lead yet further, In the fourth inning, the Grizzlies would add five more runs that included a two-run home run and a solo home run to extend the lead to 11-0.
The Warriors would have just three hits in the game, all of which were singles. Those singles came from
Kelsea Friend who finished 1-for-3,
Maddie Houtz who finished 1-for-2, and
Alycia Celia who would end 1-for-1.
In game two,
Kayla Swinson would pitch a complete game shutout after tallying five strikeouts and allowing just five hits in her seven innings pitched. Swinson would earn the victory, improving her record to 14-2 on the season.
The game would stay scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when
Samantha Proctor would fire a single into left field, scoring Houtz. The next inning, Celia would steal third and then advance home on an error by the catcher to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Webber would hold that narrow margin for the rest of th game to earn the victory thanks to Swinson.
Proctor would lead the Warriors offensively, ending 1-for-2 with an RBI, followed by Houtz and Celia who both finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Next up, the Warriors return home to face St. Thomas University in a Sun Conference series that will begin on Friday, April 8, at 4 p.m. followed by a doubleheader the following day at 12 and 2 p.m.
