Big sixth inning fuels Warriors to series-opening win over Bobcats

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 8, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team returned home to host the Bobcats of St. Thomas University in a Sun Conference matchup. A late comeback from the Warriors pushed them to a 6-5 win to open the three-game series.

Kayla Swinson would start on the mound for the Warriors (28-12 overall, 10-3 SUN), pitching a complete game and earning her 15th victory of the season. She allowed five runs on four hits while striking out seven in her seven innings of action.

The Bobcats (13-18, 5-11) would waste no time, scoring their first run of the game in the top of the first inning after an RBI single. The Warriors would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead after an RBI single from Savannah Jacobs would score Brandy Barquin. Jacobs would then steal third and advance home on an error by the catcher. A walk, a single, and a hit by pitch would load the bases for St. Thomas in the top of the fifth before a grand slam would clear the bases and earn the Bobcats a 5-2 lead.

The Warriors would pick up another run in the fifth inning after an RBI groundout from Mary-Margaret Maggard, cutting the deficit to two runs. Nicole Gutierrez would pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth and deliver an RBI double off the fence in left center field. With the very next at-bat, Genesis Aviles would fire a two-run home run to left center field to gift the Warriors a 6-5 lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.

Offensively, Webber was led by Aviles who ended the game 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI's, a run scored, and a stolen base. Jacobs was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored while Gutierrez and Maggard each had an RBI as well. Barquin finished 1-for-3 with a run scored while Miranda Muriel, Krista Hoyt and Alycia Celia each scored a run as well.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
