Warriors win series 2-1 over Ave Maria on the road

AVE MARIA, Fla. (April 25, 2022) – The Webber International University softball team traveled to Ave Maria University to face the Gyrenes in a three-game conference series. All three games ended with just a one-run margin, with the Warriors taking 1-0 and 5-4 victories in the first two games before falling 1-0 in game three.

Kayla Swinson would start on the mound in game one on Friday afternoon. It would prove to be a pitcher's duel as the game was scoreless through seven innings. Swinson would throw a complete game shutout through eight innings of work, allowing just four hits while striking out six batters along the way. She would also earn her 20th win of the season and her 10th shutout.

The only run of the game would come via an RBI single from Abby Thompson in the top of the eighth inning to earn the victory for the Warriors. There would be 10 total hits in the game, six of which came from Webber.

The starting pitcher in game two would be Morgan Mills who would allow just three hits and earn three punch-outs in her 6.2 innings of work. Mills would earn her fifth win of the season.

The Warriors would start strong, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single from Mary-Margaret Maggard would score Kelsea Friend followed by a double to left field by Witney Bones that would score Maggard. Webber would extend its lead in the third inning after a hit-by-pitch would walk a run home.

A four-run bottom of the fourth from the Gyrenes would see them take the lead at 4-3. However, the Warriors would regain the lead the following inning after a single to center field from Brandy Barquin would score Taylor Bias followed by a sacrifice fly to center from Genesis Aviles that would bring home Savannah Jacobs to gift the Warriors the 5-4 lead.

The Warriors were led in game two by Friend and Jacobs who both finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while Jacobs also added a stolen base. Maggard ended 1-for-3 with an RBI and led Webber with two runs scored.

Game three would see a return to the mound for Swinson. It would prove to be another pitcher's duel as this time it would be the Gyrenes that would squeak out the win. Swinson still pitched well allowing one run, which was unearned, on three hits while tallying four strikeouts.

The final game of the series would also take extra innings as Ave Maria would score its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Warriors will now return home for their final series of the season as they match up against the No. 18 Southeastern University Fire with a single game on Friday, April 29, at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday April 30, at 1 and 3 p.m.
