Warriors open USCB series with big 8-0 win

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 25, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team returned home on Friday afternoon to host the University of South Carolina Beaufort for the opening game of the three-game conference series. The Warriors would bring home four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 8-0 victory after five innings.

The starting pitcher for the Warriors (23-10 overall, 7-3 SUN) would be Jenna Chaudoin who would pitch all five innings. She did not allow a single run and only gave up two hits while striking out three. Chaudoin faced 17 USCB (16-12, 7-3) batters and retired 15 of them, forcing six ground-outs and six fly-outs.Getting the win on the mound improves her to 7-3 on the year so far.

Webber would pick up its first runs of the game in the bottom of the third after an RBI-single from Abigail Thompson that would score Alycia Celia followed by a sacrifice fly from Maddie Houtz. Holding a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, the Warriors would double that lead after back-to-back RBI ground-outs to third base from Celia and Mary-Margaret Maggard. Webber would then kick off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles from Thompson and Houtz. A sacrifice bunt from Savannah Jacobs would put two runners in scoring position with one out. A walk from Genesis Aviles would load the bases and the Sand Sharks would hit Johnkira Bland to walk a run home before a bases-clearing double to right center field from Brandy Barquin would put the Warriors up by eight runs to end the game.

The Warriors were led by Thompson who finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base followed by Barquin who ended the day 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI's. Celia and Houtz were both 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Maggard ended 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as well. Krista Hoyt would lead the team in runs scored with two.

The series continues tomorrow, March 26, as the two teams play a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m. The Warriors will then travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to face the Seahawks of Keiser University in a three-game series that will begin on April 1 at 4 p.m.
