Head Coach Burton reaches 100 career wins after sweep of USCB

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team completed the sweep of University of South Carolina Beaufort on Saturday afternoon after winning 3-0 in game one and 12-3 in game two. The two wins earned Head Coach Kristy Burton her 100th career win at Webber.

Coach Burton is in her fourth year at Webber International University and has now reached 100 wins and counting. Her overall record as Head Coach so far is 100-59 with a winning percentage of .629. Burton was the 2021 Sun Conference Coach of the Year while helping Webber become 2021 Sun Conference Regular-Season Champions.

Kayla Swinson would pitch a complete game no-hitter in game one while tallying four strikeouts for the Warriors (25-10 overall, 9-3 SUN).

The Warriors would pick up two runs in the bottom of the first after a two RBI-double to center field by Witney Bones. Webber would tack on one more run in the third, after an error by the third baseman to take a 3-0 lead. The Warriors would hold that lead through the end of the game thanks to Swinson's lights out pitching on the mound.

Kelsea Friend led the team offensively after going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored followed by Bones who was 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI's. Maggard finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored and Krista Hoyt was also 1-for-2 with a double.

In game two, Morgan Mills would start on the mound against the Sand Sharks (16-14, 7-5). She would allow three runs on eight hits and strike out two in her 4.2 innings pitched. She would be relieved by Jenna Chaudoin who would finish out the final 1.1 innings, not allowing a single hit against the five batters she faced.

Webber would start hot offensively picking up seven runs in the first inning. The first run would score via an RBI-single to left field by Abigail Thompson. A double from Bones would score another before another double, this time from Mills, would score two more. After a couple of walks, Hoyt would hit a double to left center that would score both Brandy Barquin and Mills. A sacrifice fly from Friend would score Genesis Aviles and earn the Warriors an early 7-0 lead. USCB would score its first run in the bottom of inning number two on a solo home run. The Sand Sharks would score pick up one run in the third and fourth innings to reduce the deficit to four runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mary-Margaret Maggard would fire a three-run home run over the left field wall to restore the Warriors' seven-run lead. Then, two batters later, a two-run home run from Maddie Houtz would put Webber up 12-3, ending the game in six innings.

Maggard finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI's, and two runs scored. Houtz, Mills, and Hoyt all finished with two RBI's to their credit. Thompson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Maggard, Houtz, and Aviles all led the team with two runs scored each.

Next up, the Warriors will travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on the Keiser University Seahawks in another Sun Conference series starting on Friday, April 1, at 4 p.m.
