LAKE WALES, Fla. (March 23, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team concluded its three-game conference series with a doubleheader against Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University, on Wednesday. The Royals would take the first game, 6-5, after extra innings to earn the series win before the Warriors would win the final game of the series, 6-2.
Morgan Mills would start in the pitcher's circle for Webber (22-10 overall, 6-3 SUN), throwing almost 120 pitches in her seven innings of work. Mills would allow five runs on seven hits, six walks, and picked up five strikeouts. Maria Imhoff would pitch the final 0.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.
The Warriors would score the first run of the game in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from
Maddie Houtz that would score
Mary-Margaret Maggard. Warner (14-15, 4-5) would score two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to gain a 2-1 lead. In the top of the second,
Taylor Bias would score on a fielder's choice by
Kelsea Friend to tie the game at 2-2. It would be short lived, however, as the Royals would score on an RBI-single to take a 3-2 lead. Warner would hold its one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth, where it would add a couple of insurance runs after a couple of RBI-singles. In the top of the seventh, the Warriors would pick up two runs after a single to left field from
Johnkira Bland would score Maggard followed by a sacrifice fly from
Abigail Thompson that would tie the game yet again at 5-5. The Royals would take the win in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off single up the middle.
Webber was led offensively by Maggard who finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Mills followed close behind going 2-for-4 while
Genesis Aviles ended 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
On the mound for the final game of the series would be
Jenna Chaudoin who would pitch a complete game, earning her sixth win of the season. Chaudoin would allow just two runs on three hits while striking out four.
Friend would score the first run of the game in the first inning after a single up the middle from Thompson. The Royals would score two runs in the bottom half of the first, including an RBI-triple to take a 2-1 lead. However, those would be the only two runs that would cross home plate for Warner. In the top of the third, Thompson would drive home Friend with another RBI-single, this time to right field, to level the game. The Warriors would retake the lead in the next inning after an error by the catcher that would score Aviles. Webber would bring home two more runs in the top of the fifth after an RBI-single from Bland followed by another RBI-single from Aviles, extending the Warriors lead to 5-2. One more run in the sixth would make it a four-run game after
Brandy Barquin would score on a wild pitch.
Thompson would lead the Warriors after finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored followed by Friend who was 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a game-high three runs scored. Bland ended the game 1-for-2 with an RBI while Aviles finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Warriors will now return home for their next Sun Conference matchup against the University of South Carolina Beaufort.
