Warriors take down Florida Memorial in Sun Conference-opener

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (March 11, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team opened Sun Conference-play in style as they traveled to Florida Memorial University and earned an emphatic 16-1 victory on the road. The win extends the Warriors win streak to six games and makes them 9-1 in away or neutral games.

The Warriors (13-7 overall, 1-0 SUN) racked up 14 hits in total for the game while limiting the Lions (1-4, 0-1) to just three. Starting on the mound for Webber would be Kayla Swinson, earning her 10th start of the season so far. She would pick up the win, making her 9-1 on the year, after allowing zero runs and just one hit while striking out four in her four innings pitched. Freshman Megan Hoskins would enter the game in relief to finish out the final inning, giving up one run on two hits and striking out three.

The first run of the game would come in the top of the first on an RBI-fielder's choice from Abigail Thompson that would score Kelsea Friend. In the second inning, Alycia Celia would hit a two-RBI single before the Lions would walk home a run later in the inning, giving the Warriors an early 4-0 lead. The third inning is where Webber would bust the game open, scoring six runs. First, and RBI-double to right center field from Paysee Crow followed by an RBI-groundout from Friend. With two outs in the inning, a single through the right side from Mary-Margaret Maggard would score Celia and then a double from Thompson would score Maggard with the next at-bat. Thompson would score on a wild pitch before a walk and an RBI-triple from Witney Bones would make it a 10-run lead.

The Warriors would score four more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a two-RBI double to right field from Maggard followed by a two-RBI single to center field from Thompson. A single to the shortstop would give Julianna Ortiz her first base hit and RBI of the season in the fifth inning. One more run would cross in the fifth thanks to a hit-by-pitch from Samantha Proctor. The Lions would score their only run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI-double to left field.

Offensively, the team was led by Maggard who finished 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI's and two runs scored followed by Thompson who ended her day 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI's and one run scored. Kylie Bright also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Celia was 1-for-1 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

"We are so proud of the team that came out today for our conference opener," Head Coach Kristy Burton spoke after the game. "The Sun Conference is one of the best in the nation, so every win is a big one. Offensively, we were unstoppable while working as a team to push across 16 runs in just five innings. Thank you to everyone who came out to support, we look forward to seeing you all out there tomorrow for our doubleheader to finish up the three-game series against FMU. Go Warriors."

Following the conclusion of the three-game series with a doubleheader against Florida Memorial on Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Warriors return home for another doubleheader against Indiana Tech University on Sunday, March 13, at 1 and 3 p.m.
