Baseball downs Warner Royals in non-conference matchup

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team hosted its Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University, on Wednesday afternoon on Heart of Florida Field. After falling to the Royals 6-0 on the road earlier in the season, the Warriors would earn a 9-6 victory this time around to remain unbeaten at home thus far this season.

Usually at first base, but this time starting on the mound for the Warriors (7-1 overall) was Gabriel Dorsey. Dorsey put in a good shift through the first three innings, giving up zero runs on three hits and striking out three as well before Dylan Martin would take over.

Webber would draw first blood in the second inning after Dorsey would hit an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Tyren Milliner. Milliner would increase the lead to two after a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martin would take the mound in inning number five and the Royals (3-3) would score four runs in the fifth inning after an RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and then a two-run home run would give them a 4-2 lead.

The Warriors would respond in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own after an RBI single from Luis Acevedo. Acevedo would make it around to third base before scoring on a wild pitch. An RBI single to third base by Josh Blackmore would score Tommy Diaz and regain the lead for Webber at 5-4. The Warriors would tack on three more runs in the sixth after Milliner would score on an error from the Royals and then a single from Kenny Rodriguez through the left side would score both Acevedo and Drake Dobyanski.

Warner would score two runs in the seventh inning to reduce the deficit to two runs. An RBI triple to center field from Diaz would extend the Warrior-lead to three in the eighth inning. Rey Rodriguez would come in to close out the last one and a third innings giving up no hits and no runs with one strikeout to earn the save and seal the victory for the Warriors.

Next up, the Warriors will have a one-day break before beginning their three-game series against the Conquistadors of Florida National University. Game one of the series will be on Friday, February 11th, at 6 p.m. on Heart of Florida Field. The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday, February 12th, at 12 and 3 p.m.
