BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 5, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team faced the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles for the second day in a row on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors captured game one 5-3 and would walk off yet again in game number two, 6-5, to complete the four game sweep.
Dylan Martin would start on the mound in game one for the Warriors (6-1 overall). It would be a rocky start as the Eagles (4-9) would go yard on the very first pitch of the game. Fort Lauderdale would add two more runs in the top of the first to gather an early 3-0 lead. Martin would settle in striking out seven in his 6.0 innings pitched.
The Warriors would lead off the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles from
Drake Dobyanski and Christian Martin. One batter later,
Tommy Diaz would level the game with a single swing, blasting a home run to left center field. Webber would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from
Kenny Rodriguez and extend the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning on an RBI single from
Richard Rodriguez.
Thomas Lopez Jr. would enter the game in the top of the seventh to close out the game and earn his first save of the new season.
Dobyanski led the Warriors offensively going 2-4 with two runs scored while Diaz was 1-3 with a home run and three RBI's.
Starting for Webber in game two was
Jacob Burr, earning his first start this season. Dobyanski would lead off the Warriors in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right center field on the first pitch. Webber would double its lead later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from
Bryan Eusebio that would score
Luis Acevedo. Another solo home run in the bottom of the second, this time from
Josh Blackmore, would increase the Warriors lead to 3-0.
The Eagles' bats would catch fire as they would score five runs on five hits and one error in the top of the third to take a 5-3 lead. An RBI double from Blackmore in the fourth inning would bring the Warriors within one run. The bottom of the seventh would start with a Dobyanski single followed by a bunt single from Acevedo. K. Rodriguez would lay down a bunt that would be picked up by the Eagles' pitcher, who would overthrow first base, scoring both runs and gifting the Warriors the 6-5 victory.
Blackmore led the Warriors offensively in game two after going 2-3 with a double, a home run, two RBI's and a run scored. Dobyanski would finish game two, 2-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.Â
The Warriors will now host Warner University in another non-conference matchup on Tuesday, February 8th at 6 p.m.
