BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 4, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team hosted the Eagles of University of Fort Lauderdale in a doubleheader on Friday evening. The Warriors took an emphatic 8-0 victory in game one before a late walk-off in game two earned them the 3-2 win.
The Warriors (4-1 overall) displayed their offensive fire power in game one with 11 base hits, six of which were for extra bases. Starting on the mound for Webber was
Xavier Rodriguez, who gave up just three hits to Fort Lauderdale (4-7) in six innings pitched. X. Rodriguez struck out eight and gave up just one walk, earning his second win of the season.
Webber would score a run in each of the first four innings. Christian Martin would score the first run of the game on a
Tommy Diaz sacrifice fly in the bottom of inning number one. Martin would then turn provider in the second inning, as a single down the left field line would score
Gabriel Dorsey. Another sacrifice fly in the third inning would score yet another, this time from
Bryan Eusebio as he brought home pinch-runner
Tavion Williams. A wild pitch from the Eagles in the fourth inning with the bases loaded would score Martin again to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead.
Richard Rodriguez would lead off the sixth inning with a single and advance to second on an error from the third baseman.
Drake Dobyanski would then stroke one into right-center field for an RBI double. Martin would draw a walk and then back-to-back doubles from
Kenny Rodriguez and Diaz would score three more, extending Webber's lead to 8-0.
Diaz would lead the Warriors offensively in game one going 2-2 with two doubles and three RBI's while Martin went 2-2 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Dobyanski, Dorsey, and K. Rodriguez all had two hits each with Dorsey hitting the only triple of the game and his first of the season.
Fort Lauderdale would earn an early lead in game number two after a lead off double, sacrifice bunt, and then a single would score the Eagles their first run in the top of the first. They would double their lead in the third inning after a one-out single through the right side would score another. The Warriors would get on the board in the fifth inning after a lead-off walk from Dobyanski followed by an RBI double to left field from Martin.
The Warriors would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh after a catcher's interface, a walk, and a single from
Luis Acevedo. A balk from the Fort Lauderdale pitcher would advance all the runners, scoring K. Rodriguez and tying the game at 2-2.
Richard Rodriguez would hit a walk-off RBI single to the shortstop to earn Webber the 3-2 victory.
Acevedo was 2-3 while Martin was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
Drake Kasparek started on the mound for the Warriors, giving up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
Rey Rodriguez came in relief, striking out six in three innings and earning his first win of the new season.
Webber will continue the four game series with another doubleheader against Fort Lauderdale tomorrow, February 5th, at 12 and 3 p.m. before hosting its Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University, on Tuesday, February 8th, at 6 p.m.
