LAKELAND, Fla. (February 27, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team traveled to Lakeland, Florida to battle the No. 1 Southeastern University Fire on its home court in the final of The Sun Conference tournament on Saturday night. The Warriors kept it close for the majority of the game, but the Fire ran away with it in the final quarter to earn their sixth Sun Conference tournament title, 88-58.
The Fire (29-1 overall, 16-0 SUN) dominated down low, outscoring the Warriors (21-7, 12-4) 44-16 in points in the paint. The Warriors also shot 36.8 percent from the field on the night compared to the 46.9 percent of the Fire.
Southeastern jumped out to an early lead after shooting over 52 percent in the first quarter. The Warriors struggled offensively early on shooting just 25 percent and were held to 10 points. After one quarter, the Fire led by 13 points and would continue to build upon that lead early in the second. With five and a half minutes remaining until halftime, the Warriors trailed by 18 points. Webber would then go on a 20-9 run over the next four and a half minutes, ending on a layup from
Jaida Burgess that would make it a seven-point game with 44 seconds left in the half. Two free throw from Southeastern just before the end of the quarter would make it a nine-point game at halftime.
It was a tight third quarter, as the Warriors would continue to try and chip away at the Southeastern lead. The Fire would do enough to hold off Webber and increase their lead to 10 points heading into the final quarter of action. The fourth quarter however, is where Southeastern would pull away, scoring 27 points and holding the Warriors to just seven points on 22.2 percent shooting.
The Warriors were led by
Eletra Graham who would come off the bench to score 25 points, her second-highest tally of the season. Six of Graham's nine field goals came from three-point range as she shot 45 percent in total for the night. She was followed by Burgess and
Rushell Jacob each with seven points.
Samantha Pacheco would lead the team with five assists while adding four points and four rebounds.
Dasia Wandick,
Amaya Lasley, and
Paulette Burke would all finish with four rebounds as well. Burke and
Amaya Small would both lead the team in steals with three each.
