Women's basketball falls in opening round of NAIA National Championship, 81-65

DAYTON, Tenn. (March 11, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team participated in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship for the second year in a row, facing the same team from last year, No. 9 Bryan College. In a rematch of last year's game, the Warriors played a close game in the first half but ultimately fell short in the second half, 81-65.

The Warriors (21-8 overall) slightly outshot the Lions (31-1) in terms of field goal percentage, shooting just under 40 percent compared to 38.6 percent. Both teams made an equal number of turnovers in the game, however, Bryan was a little more effective in paint scoring (38-32) and in points off of turnovers (16-10).

Webber shot over 47 percent in the first quarter and were led by Amaya Small who had eight points, giving the Warriors an 18-16 lead heading into quarter number two. Despite shooting a much higher percentage than the Lions in the second quarter, the Warriors were still outscored 23-21 and the two teams entered halftime tied at 39. Webber would come out of the break slowly, struggling to get anything going offensively and shooting just 28 percent in the third quarter. The Lions would build up a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. The Warriors continued to struggle offensively and would be unable to string together some baskets to try and chip away at the Lion-lead. Bryan would hold the Warriors to just 25 percent shooting in the quarter and see out the victory to advance to the next round of the tournament.

Offensively, the Warriors were led by Jaida Burgess who totaled 21 points on 47.3 percent shooting while adding seven rebounds and two steals. She was followed by Dasia Wandick who would end the game with a double-double after tallying 12 points and grabbing a game-high 15 boards. LeAndra Franklin ended her night with 11 points, six rebounds, a team-high four assists, and two steals. Small finished with eight points, five rebounds, and led the team with three steals.Triniti Lee would lead the team with two blocks on the defensive end.

The Warriors finish their season as The Sun Conference Runners-Up and finished with an overall record of 21-8. It is the first time the Warriors have finished with at least 20 wins in a season since 2015-16.
