MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 27, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team won its first Sun Conference series after dropping game one to Florida Memorial University on Friday and then winning 8-5 and 8-4 in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Warriors (16-2 overall, 2-1 SUN) started with last week's Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week,
Dylan Martin, on the mound for the first game of the doubleheader. Martin had six innings pitched, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out seven batters before being relieved by
Thomas Lopez Jr. for the final three innings of the game who would give up just one run on four hits.
It would not take long for Webber to get itself on the board as in the first inning, with two outs and runners at the corners,
Tyren Milliner would blast a three-run home run to right field, gifting the Warriors an early 3-0 lead. The Lions (7-4, 3-3) would pick up a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI-double up the middle. The Warriors would extend their lead in the top of the sixth, starting with an RBI-single from Christian Martin that would score
Drake Dobyanski. Florida Memorial would later walk home another run before a two-RBI single through the left side from
Angel Diaz would give Webber a six-run buffer. In the next half inning, the Lions would cut the deficit in half after a triple down the left field line would score two runs followed by an RBI-single in the very next at bat. Both sides would pick up a run in the ninth, first from the Warriors on a single from
Richard Rodriguez that scored
Chris Williams. Lopez Jr. would give up just the one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Webber would see out the victory.
Ri. Rodriguez led the Warriors offensively, going 4-5 with four singles and an RBI followed by
Kenny Rodriguez who finished 3-5 with a double, a triple, and a run scored. C. Williams was 2-5 with a triple and a run scored while Milliner led the team with three RBI's and a home run.
Tommy Diaz ended the game 1-5 with two RBI's and C. Martin and
Luis Acevedo both had two runs scored.
Drake Kasparek started on the mound in game two and earned his fifth win of the season, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on 11 hits and struck out two in his six innings pitched.
Florida Memorial would get on the board first in the bottom of the first, getting two runs on four hits including an RBI-single to center field. Webber would respond with two runs of its own in the next half inning thanks to a double to left field from
Ian Kalman that would score K. Rodriguez followed by an RBI-single from
Josh Blackmore later in the inning. An RBI-single from the Lions in the bottom of the second would regain them the lead, 3-2. The lead would change yet again in the top of the third after a double to right field from C. Martin would score Acevedo followed by an RBI-single to right field from Milliner. The Warriors would extend their lead to four runs in the fourth inning after a single from K. Rodriguez would score both Acevedo and Ri. Rodriguez. Florida Memorial would grab their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but the Warriors would score one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Webber would take the 8-4 victory and capture the series 2-1.
K. Rodriguez was a perfect 3-3 with a double, two RBI's, and two runs scored. He was followed by Kalman who ended the game 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI's and a run scored. Ri. Rodriguez, C. Martin, Blackmore, and Milliner all had one RBI each as well.
The Warriors now return home for what will be a 17-game home stand over the next 20 days, starting with a doubleheader against Roosevelt University on Monday, February 28, at 4 and 7 p.m.
