Warriors split doubleheader with Roosevelt

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team hosted the Roosevelt University Lakers in a doubleheader on Monday evening. The Warriors would split the series after taking game one 7-2, and dropping a tight game two, 4-3.

Jacob Burr would start on the mound for the Warriors (17-3) in game one, earning his first win of the season after allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out four in his 5.2 innings pitched. Praxie Vigil would enter the game in relief, closing out the final 1.1 innings giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.

Roosevelt (2-5 overall) would strike first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Warriors would respond with a four-run bottom of the first, starting with a two-RBI single through the right side from Kenny Rodriguez followed by a bases-clearing triple from Jacob Bluffstone. The Lakers would score another run on an RBI-single in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 4-2. In the bottom of the third inning, Bluffstone would deliver an RBI-single through the left side, scoring K. Rodriguez. The Warriors would add a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI from Bryan Eusebio and a single through the right side from Richard Rodriguez, scoring Matt Morgan and extending the lead to 7-2.

Bluffstone led the Warriors offensively, going 2-2 with a triple and three RBI's followed by K. Rodriguez who ended 1-2 with two RBI's, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.Chris Williams also finished game one 1-2 with a double and a run scored.

The Warriors starting pitcher in game number two would be Gabriel Dorsey who would pitch for just two innings, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits. Thomas Nelson would pitch 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit before Rey Rodriguez would pitch the final 3.1 innings. Re. Rodriguez would strike out five and give up one run on three hits.

The Lakers would start game two strong, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Roosevelt would extend its lead to three runs after an RBI-single in the top of the fourth. The Warriors would pick up their first run of the game in the next half inning thanks to an Angel Diaz single to center field, scoring Luis Acevedo. In the bottom of the fifth, K. Rodriguez would tie up the game with a two-RBI double to center field, leveling it at three apiece. An RBI-single from the Lakers in the top of the seventh would regain them the lead, 4-3.

Offensively, Webber was led by K. Rodriguez who was 1-3 with a double and two RBI's followed by A. Diaz who was 1-3 with an RBI as well.

The Warriors will now host Grand View University in another non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 2, at 4 and 7 p.m.
