BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 22, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team hosted Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Monday night. The Warriors held off the Cougars to earn the 9-7 victory and extend their win streak to 12 games.
Starting on the mound for the Warriors (14-1 overall) would be
Jacob Burr who would allow four runs on five hits while striking out four in his four and a third innings pitched.
Praxie Vigil would enter the game in relief in the fifth inning, allowing just one run on three hits with one strikeout and earning his first win of the season.
The Warriors would start off the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second, including an RBI single to right field from
Bryan Eusebio. The Cougars (0-1) would respond in the next half inning with three runs of their own. In the fourth inning, a solo home run from
Chris Williams would knot the game up at 3-3. The Cougars would score a run to regain the lead in the fifth inning before hitting a solo home run in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to two runs. The Warriors would score four runs in the bottom of the seventh that included a two-RBI triple from
Angel Diaz, taking a 7-5 lead. Webber would walk home a run for the Cougars in the top of the eighth inning before
Josh Blackmore would smack a two-RBI double down the left field line in the next half inning to extend the lead to 9-6. The Warriors would give up one run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch but
Thomas Lopez Jr. would enter the game to throw one pitch that would be swung on and turned into a double-play to end the game and earn him his third save of the season.
Blackmore ended the game 2-4 with a double and two RBI's followed by Christian Martin who was also 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base to his credit.
Kenny Rodriguez was 1-3 on the night with a run scored, a stolen base, and two walks. Martin, Diaz, and
Tavion Williams all led the Warriors with two runs scored each.
Next up, Webber travels to Miami Gardens, Florida to match up against Florida Memorial University for its Sun Conference opener on Friday, February 25, at 2 p.m. There will be a doubleheader the following day at 12 and 3 p.m. to round out the three-game series.
