BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team hosted the Bears of Truett McConnell University in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Warriors held off the Bears in game one earning a narrow 3-2 win in game one, but were shut out in an 8-0 defeat in game number two.
Despite giving up seven hits to the Bears (3-7 overall) while only getting two of their own, the Warriors (5-7) made theirs count in a tight game one victory. Truett McConnell had many opportunities in the game but left six runners on base in total for the game.
Sophomore
Kayla Swinson would start on the mound for Webber in game number one. It was a little bit of a shaky start for Swinson as she would give up a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Those would be the only runs she would concede, however, as after that she would go on to find her groove and earn the win and complete game. Swinson would give up just the two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits and would strike out eight batters in her seven innings pitched.
A lead-off walk from
Genesis Aviles in the bottom of the second, followed by a stolen base would put a runner in scoring position. With the next at bat,
Nicole Gutierrez would blast a two-run home run off of the top of the football press box in left field to tie the game up at two apiece. The next inning, an RBI single to left center field from
Abigail Thompson would score
Alycia Celia to earn the Warriors the a one-run lead. Those would be the only two hits of the game for Webber, but it would be enough to see them across the finish line for the victory thanks to Swinson.
Morgan Mills would be the starting pitcher in game number two, throwing 6.1 innings. She gave up four runs, two unearned, on seven hits, one walk, and struck out three. The Warriors again struggled at the plate, only mustering two hits again in game two.
The Bears would kick off the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third, two of which came on a two-RBI triple to left center field. An RBI single to left field in the sixth inning would extend the lead to four heading into the final inning of play. Truett McConnell would pile on four more runs in the final inning to put the game to bed and seal the 8-0 defeat for the Warriors.
Next up, the Warriors will travel to Jacksonville, Florida to face Trinity Baptist College on Tuesday, February 22, in a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m.
