Big second half fuels Warriors past Thomas, 81-55

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 13, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team returned home to host the Nighthawks of Thomas University, resulting in a 81-55  victory. The Warriors are now 10-1 when playing at home.

The Warriors (19-5 overall, 11-3 SUN) actually finished with a lower shooting percentage than the Nighthawks (1-20, 1-14) at 41.3 percent compared to 47.4 percent. However, the Webber defense was swarming, forcing Thomas into 35 total turnovers. The Warriors were able to capitalize on this, finishing with 38 points off turnovers.

Webber built up a small lead over the course of the first quarter and was heading into quarter number two, ahead by six at 20-14. The Warriors struggled offensively in the second quarter, shooting just 26.1 percent for the quarter and allowed the Nighthawks to cut the lead to just two points at 35-33 heading into the halftime break. In the final two quarters, the Warriors would regain their confidence offensively and build upon their lead making it 57-50 heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter is where the Warriors really put the game to bed, scoring 24 points on 58.8 percent shooting from the field, all while holding the Nighthawks to five total points in the quarter on 10 percent shooting.

Amaya Small led the way for the Warriors, tying her season-high of 18 points and grabbing 12 total rebounds for her second double-double of the season and ninth of her career at Webber. Small also added five steals and three blocks on the defensive end. Jaida Burgess finished with 18 points as well, a season-high for her, while adding three steals. LeAndra Franklin led the team in both assists with nine and steals with seven. Franklin has now surpassed 100 assists for the season and is seven away from surpassing 100 steals as well. Samantha Pacheco and Eletra Graham finished with nine points each with Pacheco also adding five assists.Rushell Jacob tallied eight points and five rebounds while Paulette Burke ended with seven points and five rebounds as well.

The Warriors must now travel to St. Thomas University on Thursday, February 17th, for their final road game of the season at 5:30 p.m. The team will then return home for its Senior Day and regular-season finale against Florida Memorial on Saturday, February 19th.
