MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 17, 2022) - In what was the final road matchup of the regular season, the Webber International University women's basketball team traveled to face St. Thomas University for the second time this season on Thursday evening. A slow first half forced the Warriors to have to play catch up and in the end they were unable to as they suffered a 69-53 defeat to the Bobcats.
The Warriors (19-6 overall, 11-4 SUN) had a very slow first half offensively scoring just 15 points and shooting 21.4 percent from the field. Although Webber outscored its opposition in points off turnovers, second chance points, and bench points, the Bobcats (11-15, 7-9) were much more efficient shooting 49 percent compared to 32.8 percent.
With Webber having a slow start offensively in the first half, the Bobcats waisted no time jumping out to an early lead and building on it throughout the first and second quarters. The Warriors were outscored 23-6 in the second quarter and St. Thomas would reach the halftime break with a 24-point lead at 39-15. In the second half, the Warriors would begin to pick it up offensively as they would begin to chip away at the lead. However, that lead would prove to be insurmountable as it was too little too late and the Bobcats would break their three-game losing streak.
After setting a season-high in last week's victory against Thomas University,
Jaida Burgess would set a new season-high of 19 points on 50 percent shooting from the field. She was followed by
Eletra Graham with 12 points, all of which came from three-pointers.
Amaya Small finished with six points while leading the team with eight rebounds and recording a block and a steal on the defensive end.
Rushell Jacob,
Dasia Wandick, and
Paulette Burke all finished with four total rebounds each.
Next up for the Warriors will be their Senior Day and regular-season finale on Saturday, February 19, at 2 p.m. against Florida Memorial University. The loss against St. Thomas means that both Webber and Florida Memorial are 11-4 in The Sun Conference. The winner of Saturday's game will finish second place in the conference and earn a first round bye in The Sun Conference tournament.
