Warriors sweep Florida National to remain unbeaten at home

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 13, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team completed its three-game series against Florida National University with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors were victorious on both games, 4-2 in game one and 9-7 in game two, completing the three-game sweep and remaining unbeaten on Heart of Florida Field.

Drake Kasparek would start on the mound for the Warriors in game one, earning the win while giving up just two runs, both unearned, on three hits and striking out six in his five innings pitched. Praxie Vigil would come in relief giving up zero hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch in his 1.2 innings. Rey Rodriguez would enter the game to record the final out and earn the save in the bottom of the seventh.

Webber would strike first in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI single to left field from Tyren Milliner would score Luis Acevedo for the first run of the game. The Conquistadors would respond in the next half inning with two unearned runs to gain the 2-1 lead. Acevedo would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at two apiece. Then, a two-run home run from Milliner would score Kenny Rodriguez and regain the lead for the Warriors at 4-2.

Milliner led the Warriors offensively, going 3-3 with a home run, three RBI's and a run scored while Chris Williams went 1-3 with the only other hit of the game.

The starting pitcher for Webber in game two would be Jacob Burr who would give up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work. The Warriors would then rotate in several pitchers throughout the game including Thomas Nelson, Casey Lawson, Alexandor Gable, Jordan Gonzalez, and Thomas Lopez Jr.

The Warriors would score first in the bottom of the first inning before the Conquistadors would respond with a run of their own in the top of inning number two. Webber would bust the game open with a seven-run bottom of the second that included an RBI double to right-center field from Markantony Perez as well as a two-run homer from K. Rodriguez, making it an 8-1 lead. Florida National would hit a two-run home run of their own followed by an RBI single in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to four runs. The Warriors would score one more in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to take a 9-4 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Conquistadors would score three more in the top of the sixth before the Webber would stop the bleeding and see out the 9-7 win.

Acevedo went 2-2 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored while sophomore Ian Kalman finished 2-3 with a run scored. Perez finished with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and drew two walks.

Next up, the Warriors travel to Montgomery, Alabama to face the No. 6 nationally-ranked Faulkner University Eagles in a three-game series beginning with a single game on Friday, February 18th, at 4 p.m. before playing a doublheader the next day at 12 and 3 p.m.
