Baseball takes first two games of series over No. 6 Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (February 18, 2022) - Facing top-25 opposition for the first time this season, the Webber International University baseball team traveled to take on the No. 6 Faulkner University Eagles. The three-game series began with a doubleheader on Friday in which the Warriors took both games, 7-3 in game one and 6-1 in game two.

Xavier Rodriguez started on the mound for the Warriors in game one and continued his hot start to the season thus far. He pitched six innings allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine along the way. X. Rodriguez earned his fourth win in as many starts and has struck out 34 batters  so far this season with an ERA of 0.35.

Back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the third inning from Richard Rodriguez and Drake Dobyanski would be followed by an RBI double to left center field from Luis Acevedo to score the first run of the game. A groundout to second base from Kenny Rodriguez would score Dobyanski, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead. The following inning, Webber would tack on two more after a two RBI single to right field by Ri. Rodriguez would score Angel Diaz and Tavion Williams.

The Eagles would get themselves on the board in the bottom of inning number five with an RBI single to left field. In the next half inning, the Warriors would score two more after five-straight hits that included RBI singles from both Ri. Rodriguez and Acevedo. A sacrifice fly to center field by K. Rodriguez would score one more and Webber would extend its lead to six heading into the final inning. Faulkner would score two runs on a two run home run in the bottom of the seventh but Thomas Lopez Jr. would get himself out of the inning, seeing out the 7-3 victory for the Warriors.

Ri. Rodriguez led the team offensively in game one going 3-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored. He was followed by Dobyanski who finished 2-3 with a run scored while Acevedo was 2-4 with two RBI's. Angel Diaz was 1-3 with two runs scored and Ian Kalman ended the game 1-2 with a run scored as well.

Game two's starting pitcher was Dylan Martin who was lights out, allowing no runs and just three hits with nine strikeouts in his six innings of action. He would earn his third win of the season with Rey Rodriguez coming in to pitch two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits and striking out four while Dawson Young would finish off the final inning by striking out all three batters he faced.

The Warriors would start off strong with four runs in the first inning after an RBI single from Tyren Milliner followed by a two-run home run from Angel Diaz. Faulkner would pull one back in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single, however, that would be the only run of the game for the Eagles. Webber would add one more run in each of the final two innings on an RBI single from Milliner that would score Dobyanski in the top of the eighth and an RBI single from Kalman that would score T. Williams in the top of the ninth.

Both A. Diaz and Milliner would end the game 2-4 with two RBI's and a run scored while Ri. Rodriguez would finish 1-4 with a double. Acevedo finished 1-5 with a double and a run scored and Dobyanski led the team with two runs scored.

The Warriors finish up their three-game series against No. 6 Faulkner on Saturday, February 19, at 1 p.m. EST before returning home to face Mount Vernon Nazarene University in a single game on Monday, February 21, at 6 p.m.
