LAKELAND, Fla. (December 1, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team took on the Southeastern University Fire in its second conference game of the season in Lakeland, Florida on Thursday night. The Fire's offense was too hot too handle as the Warriors were unable to keep up and suffered their first road-loss of the season, 87-69.
Southeastern (4-5 overall, 2-2 SUN) was firing on all cylinders offensively as they put up 87 points on over 50 percent shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Warriors (3-2, 1-1) shot 40.3 percent in total and were dominated down low as they were outscored 40-22 in points in the paint.
Despite never leading in the game, the Warriors were tied at four apiece after just four minutes of play. Over the next six and a half minutes, the Fire were able to go on a 17-5 run to establish a 12-point lead.
K'Shun Stokes then sank a three-pointer and then stole the ball and scored a layup in transition to cut the deficit to seven points. Southeastern did not back down. however, as they continued to build upon their lead. The Fire led by as many as 14 points with five minutes remaining and led by 13 at the halftime break.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, it was more of the same in the second half as Southeastern kept its foot on the gas. Webber cut the lead to 12 points on several occasions but the Fire were there to respond every time. Southeastern extended its lead to 21 with seven minutes left in the game and were comfortable enough to see out the victory.
Stokes led the team in both points with 18 and rebounds with eight while also tallying the only block of the night for the Warriors. Orri Hilmarrson scored 14 points on 62.5 percent shooting and led the team in steals with two while
Tiyon Martin ended with 10 points, all of which came in the second half. Martin added two assists and three rebounds to his credit.
Jordan Golden had six rebounds on the night and added four points and two assists as well.
The Warriors will now return home for their first Sun Conference matchup on home court as they face the Keiser University Seahawks on Saturday, December 3rd at 4 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
