Warriors Soar Past Seahawks in Bounce-Back Victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 3, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team hosted the Seahawks of Keiser University in what was its second home game of the season on Saturday evening. The Warriors dominated the boards and the paint en route to an 85-58 victory for their first win of the season on home court.

The Warriors (4-2 overall, 2-1 SUN) shot 48.5 percent from the field while also outnumbering the Seahawks (5-3, 3-1) in points in the paint, 46-18, and in rebounds, 45-27. 19 of those 45 rebounds for Webber were offensive rebounds, its highest tally for a single game so far this season. The victory for the Warriors also hands Keiser its first loss in Sun Conference action.

Scoring was hard to come by for both teams to start off the game as there were just nine points scored in total throughout the first seven and a half minutes of play. Tied at 15 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, the Warriors went on an 11-0 run after back to back three's from Eddie Davis and Tiyon Martin followed by a K'Shun Stokes-layup and a three by Orri Hilmarsson. Webber increased its lead to as many as 17 points with just over one minute left in the half and still carried a 16 point lead at the break.

The Warriors continued their relentless pressure on Keiser entering the second half, increasing the lead to 21 after just two and a half minutes. The Seahawks attempted to get themselves back in the game and began chipping away at the lead but Webber responded as a layup from Jordan Golden followed by two Hilmarsson-three's in a row extended the gap yet again to 23 points. The Warriors' offense proved to be too much for Keiser as they increased their lead even further to as many as 29 points with just over two minutes left.

"It was a great, tough, team-win against one of the best teams in the conference", said Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge. "It's nice to see us play hard and really compete on the defensive end. We played with a lot more energy which allowed us to execute on offense as well as out-rebound one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Multiple guys stepped up and made winning plays tonight. We appreciate the support from the fans and cheerleaders as they made a huge impact on us throughout the game. We will build off this hard work and be ready for our upcoming game. Go Warriors!"

Davis led the way for the Warriors with an impressive stat-line of 18 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. He shot 50 percent in total and did not have a single turnover in his 28 minutes of action. Webber's leading scorer was Stokes with 20 as he added five rebounds as well. Hilmarsson totaled 17 points on 50 percent shooting from downtown and added three steals on the defensive end. Golden finished with his first double-double of the season and second of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals. Chinecherem Anukaenyi recorded the second-most rebounds on the team with nine and added six points while Martin tallied seven points and four assists.

Webber now looks forward to its next matchup against the University of Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, December 8th at 7 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors will then play an exhibition match against Division-I Stetson University on Saturday, December 10th.
