THOMASVILLE, Ga. (November 6, 2022) - The Webber International University men's soccer team traveled to Thomas University to battle the Night Hawks in The Sun Conference Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon.
Joseph O'Sullivan scored twice to fuel the Warriors to a 2-0 victory and advance the team to the semifinal match.
The victory gives the Warriors (10-3-1 overall) their 10th win of the season. It is the first time Webber has reached double-digit wins since the 2006 season in which it made its first and only NAIA National Tournament appearance. It is a set of milestones for Head Coach
Neil Cockburn as he sets personal records for wins in a single season (10) as well as reaching 100 career wins in his 15th season at Webber International. The milestone of 100 wins also makes Cockburn the winningest coach in the history of the men's soccer program.
The Warriors tied with Thomas (7-6-5) in the regular season and this match was just as even as the first. Both teams had a near equal number of scoring opportunities, but it was the Warriors that capitalized on theirs.
Webber opened the scoring just over ten minutes into the match as O'Sullivan received a pass from
Ruben Marquez and scored the goal to hand the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. The Night Hawks had just three shots on goal in the first half and goalkeeper
Gianni Honsel was in the way of all three, keeping Webber in the lead at halftime.
Starting the second half of play, O'Sullivan scored his and the Warriors' second goal of the match less than five minutes in. With a 2-0 lead, Webber stood strong defensively and held on for the remainder of the match to advance to the semifinal round of The Sun Conference Tournament.
The Warriors will now face the Sun Conference Regular-Season Champion, Keiser University Seahawks, who are currently ranked as No. 8 in the NAIA. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8th in West Palm Beach, Florida.
