Warriors Drop Home-Opener to Ave Maria

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 14, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team matched up against the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University for its first home matchup of the season on Monday night. It was a tightly contested game, however, the Warriors struggled in the fourth quarter as the Gyrenes took the victory, 73-63.

The Warriors (0-4 overall, 0-2 SUN) shot well as a team at 44.3 percent and played well in transition, tallying 16 fast-break points. It was second-chance points that came back to haunt them as Ave Maria (5-1, 2-0) gathered a staggering 23 offensive rebounds while tallying 25 second-chance points.

Webber looked to set the tone early as it jumped out to an early 12-4 lead over the first four and a a half minutes of the quarter. The Gyrenes then began to settle into the game and battled back, taking their first lead of the game with 18 seconds left in the quarter. A layup by Rushell Jacob as time expired handed the Warriors their lead back heading into quarter number two. Just over two minutes into the quarter, the two teams were level at 23, before Ave Maria sparked an 18-5 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 13-point lead. Webber was able to cut into the deficit but still found itself trailing by seven at halftime.

The Warriors started the third quarter off well offensively, scoring nine points over the first two minutes to retake the lead at 45-43. There was four more lead changes over the next five minutes as both teams fought for the lead. Webber held a three-point lead at 55-52, heading into the final quarter of action. The Gyrenes started the fourth quarter well and never looked back as the Warriors struggled offensively. Webber was outscored 21-8 in the fourth quarter as it fell for the fourth-straight time to start the season.

Alexandria Lemmon scored a career-high 19 points on 66.7 percent shooting and converted three of her five attempts from deep while also recording five rebounds and two steals. She was followed by Jaida Burgess with 14 points and Jermasia Klopsis and Jacob, each with eight. Samantha Pacheco led the team in both rebounds with 10 and assists with six. Dasia Wandick was a jack-of-all-trades as she ended with eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Triniti Lee added two blocks and a steal as well on the night.

It will be back on the road for the Warriors as they now have just a one-day break before traveling to take on NCAA Division-II Rollins College on Wednesday. The team then has its third game of the week against the University of Fort Lauderdale at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th.
