WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 16, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team matched up against Division-II Rollins College on Wednesday night. The Warriors led from start to finish as they used a strong first half offensively to fuel them to their first victory of the 2022-23 season, 57-47.
The Warriors (1-4 overall) played well defensively, holding the Tarps (2-1) to just 32.2 percent shooting in total and just 11.1 percent from three-point range. Webber also capitalized on turnovers more often than Rollins, outscoring the home team 16-11 in points off turnovers.
The Warriors came out of the gates hot, taking an early 10-2 lead over the first five minutes of quarter number one. Webber did well to maintain that lead throughout the remainder of the quarter, as they led 18-9 to start the second quarter. It was the Tarps that had the hot start in quarter number two as they went on a 12-6 run, cutting the deficit to just three points.
Dasia Wandick would then score back-to-back layups and five points in total after hitting an and-one on the second layup to kick start a run by the Warriors. A 14-3 run by Webber extended its lead to 14 at 38-24 heading into halftime.
With a comfortable lead, the Warriors used tough defensive in the second half to maintain that lead. Webber extended their lead to as many as 19 points roughly two and a half minutes into the third quarter. In the final quarter of play, the Warriors led by 17 points with five minutes left in the game. Rollins then went on a 7-0 run over the final five minutes to make the scoreline look a little closer than it actually was.
Jaida Burgess led the team in total points with 11 while adding four rebounds and two assists. She was followed by
Alexandria Lemmon,
Jermasia Klopsis, and Wandick all with nine points each. Lemmon also tallied four rebounds and two assists while Wandick finished tied with
Rushell Jacob for the most rebounds on the team with six and recorded a block and a steal on the defensive end.
Samantha Pacheco finished with six points, four rebounds, three steals, and a team-high three assists. Klopsis led the team defensively with four steals in total, a season-high for her.
Triniti Lee also contributed defensively with three blocks on the night.
The Warriors improve to 1-4 on the year and will now look forward to their next game against the University of Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, November 19th at 2 p.m.
