Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat in Conference Opener

LAKE WALES, Fla. (November 13, 2022) - In what was The Sun Conference opener for both teams, the Webber International University women's basketball team faced its rival, Warner University, on Saturday afternoon. A tough third quarter saw the Royals pull away to take a 59-49 victory against the traveling Warriors.

The Warriors (0-3 overall, 0-1 SUN) were unable to get going offensively, shooting just 25% in total. Although defensively, Webber forced the Royals (2-2, 1-0) into 21 turnovers.

It was a defensive first quarter as both teams struggled to score, ending at just 9-9. Warner improved offensively in the second quarter, and tied at 19, went on a 6-2 run to end the half. The Warriors trailed by four entering the halftime break at 25-21.

The Royals came out of halftime hot, going on a 17-4 run over the majority of the quarter, extending their lead to as many as 17. Webber trailed by 15 heading into the final quarter of play. The final quarter was the best offensive quarter for the Warriors as they scored 20 points, led by Jaida Burgess and Alexandria Lemmon each with seven. It would not be enough, however, as the Royals held off the comeback to earn the victory.

The Warriors were led by Burgess with 15 points and 10 rebounds, earning her first double-double of the season. She was followed by Lemmon with 14 points on 50% shooting from the field and also tallied four steals on the defensive end. Samantha Pacheco finished with a well-rounded stat line of seven points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals.

Webber now returns home for its home-opener when it takes on Ave Maria University on Monday, November 14th at 7 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
