Warriors Win Crooked Lake Cup with Victory over Royals

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 1, 2022) - The Webber International University men's soccer team hosted the Warner University Royals in what was the second leg of the Crooked Lake Cup as well as Senior Day on Tuesday afternoon. With a 2-0 lead on aggregate after defeating the Royals on their home turf earlier this season, the Warriors improved on that performance with a 3-0 victory this time around.

The Warriors (9-3-1 overall, 4-3-1 SUN) had the majority of scoring opportunities in the match, firing off 24 shots compared to the 11 of the Royals (5-10-0, 1-7-0).

Webber tested the Royals' goalkeeper early with three shots that all needed saving the first 16 minutes, The Warriors opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after Joseph O'Sullivan played a perfectly weighted pass over the top of the Warner defense for Luke Piveral who then chipped the ball over the head of the goalie for the first goal of the match. The Royals had just two shots on target in the half, both of which were saved quite comfortably by Gianni Honsel in net.

At the beginning of the second half, Warner would have a sustained spell of pressure but the momentum would soon shift. In the 57th minute, Daniel Perez found himself in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and earned a penalty after being tripped up in the box. Senior Isaac Thomas stepped up to the spot and fired it into the side-netting to double the Warrior lead. Webber looked comfortable with a 2-0 lead but began to pressure the Royals in the final 15 minutes of the match. A pass from Ori Sela in the 89th minute connected with Marc Bonafe who then chipped the keeper for the second time.

Piveral scored his seventh goal of the season, making him the Warriors' second-highest goal scorer this season behind only O'Sullivan who has eight on the year. Thomas tallied his third goal on the year while Bonafe recorded his sixth goal of the year. Both Bonafe and Piveral are tied with a total of nine goal contributions for the season.

The win over the Royals also earns Head Coach Neil Cockburn the 99th victory of his career at Webber International. He is just one victory shy of 100 career wins in his 15th season as head coach of the Warriors.

The Warriors regular season comes to a close as they now look ahead to the Sun Conference tournament in which they will play Thomas University on Saturday, November 5th in Thomasville, Georgia. Webber previously drew 1-1 with the Night Hawks earlier in the regular season.
