LAKE WALES, Fla. (October 29, 2022) - In what was the regular-season finale, the Webber International University women's soccer team traveled to Warner University to face its Crooked Lake rival on Saturday afternoon. The contest was very evenly matched although the Warriors were unfortunate to concede a late goal resulting in a 1-1 draw.
The Warriors (8-3-3 overall, 2-3-3 SUN) took a slight edge over the Royals (4-6-5, 1-3-2) in terms of total number of shots, 13-10. Although, it was Warner that had one more shot on target with seven in total for the match.
The first 15 minutes of the match was controlled slightly more by the Royals aas they fired off three shots, but all of which would be saved by goalkeeper
Cameron Laine. In the 22nd minute, the Warriors had two shots less than a minute apart, one from
Hayden Rupe and one from
Hannah Vigotty, both of which were saved.
Deborah Guillen made the breakthrough for Webber as she scored her fourth goal of the season thanks to a pass from
Leah McDaid. The Warriors held that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
McDaid provided the first shot of the second half in the 52nd minute but it was saved and the Warriors remained with their goal advantage. Both teams had spells of possession and good attacking play as Webber looked to double its lead and the Royals searched for an equalizer. Warner's consistent pressure payed off as in the 89th minute of the match, the Royals finally got their goal. They sat back defensively to avoid a late winner from the Warriors as they hung on for a 1-1 draw.
The regular season has come to an end as the Warriors now await for the rest of the teams in the conference to conclude their seasons and see who they will match up against in the first round of The Sun Conference Tournament.
