Women's Soccer Falls to No. 13 SCAD in Quarterfinals

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (November 6, 2022) - The Webber International University women's soccer team opened The Sun Conference Tournament with a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 13 SCAD-Savannah Bees on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors played a close match but the offensive prowess of the Bees was too much in a 3-1 defeat on the road.

The Warriors (8-4-3 overall) were heavily outshot, 23-5, in terms of total shots, however, the majority of shots by SCAD (15-3-1) were off target as they had only an 8-4 advantage in number of shots on target.

The Bees did not take long to get off the mark as they scored the first goal of the match just over two minutes in, taking an early 1-0 lead. A minute and a half later, the Warriors earned a free-kick attempt from roughly 10 yards inside the midfield line. The ball was sent into the box and subsequently cleared out by the Bees, but only as far as Deborah Guillen who ran onto the loose ball, hitting it on a half-volley and rocketing it into the top-right hand corner of the goal to level the match yet again.

After having a goal from each team in the first three and a half minutes of the match, the pace of play settled for a while. As the match progressed, SCAD began pressuring the Warriors more and more until eventually they scored a second in the 32nd minute. The Bees doubled their lead less than seven minutes later as another goal gave them a 3-1 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, SCAD kept its foot on the gas and continued to push for a fourth in the effort to extend the lead yet further. The Warrior defense stood strong, however, but was unable to get much offensive momentum in order to fight their way back into the match. The match ended in a 3-1 defeat after 90 minutes, ultimately ending the season for the Warriors.

Webber had just the lone goal from Guillen that will most certainly be a Goal of the Year contender. Cameron Laine was in between the sticks for the Warriors, tallying five saves in total.

It is the second season in a row that the Warriors have ended with a winning record and advanced to The Sun Conference Tournament. It has been over 15 years since Webber has finished with back-to-back winning seasons (over .500). The Warriors end the 2022 season with an overall record of 8-4-3 and 2-3-3 in conference play.
