Warriors Fall to Florida Memorial for Second Time this Season

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 27, 2022) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team hosted the Florida Memorial University Lions for the second matchup of the season on Wednesday night. After dropping two incredibly close sets, the Warriors fell to the Lions 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-20).

Just as the first time these two teams faced, it was very evenly matched. The Warriors (13-13 overall, 3-8 SUN) and Lions (11-6, 7-5) both had nearly the same amount of kills for the match with Webber having slightly more blocks and FMU with slightly more serving aces.

The Warriors took a slight advantage early on, leading 9-5. A 7-1 run by Florida Memorial saw it take its first lead of the set at 12-10. Webber then scored three-straight to regain the lead at 13-12. The Warriors slowly built upon that lead and were winning by three late in the set at 22-19. The Lions then tied it at 22 and the two teams went back and forth into overtime. The Warriors held advantage at 26-25 and just needed one more point, but FMU scored three-in-a-row to end the set 28-26 and take a 1-0 lead for the match.

This time it was the Lions that took an early lead in the second set, 6-2. But again, the Warriors battled back to tie it up at 10.  A 5-2 run by the Lions saw them regain their lead, 15-12. Momentum began to swing back in Webber's direction as it eventually stole the lead back at 20-18. Once more, Florida Memorial came back to retake the lead by two and the Warriors worked their way back into the set, tying it at 24. A kill followed by a service ace from the Lions earned them the win in the second set as well, leading 2-0.

Florida Memorial jumped out to an early lead in the third set as well as the wind seemed knocked out of the Warriors. The Lions led by as many as seven points and the Warriors slowly chipped away at the deficit to get back within two at 22-20. FMU scored the next three to seal the 3-0 victory.

Leading the team in kills was Cintia Lorena with 14 on .429 hitting. She was followed by Nadia Reid with eight and Bailey Sikkema with seven. Amanda Vega led the team in assists with 13 while Paysee Crow and Ana Clara Araujo each had nine.

Bailey Berger led the team in digs with 14 followed by Crow with seven and Vega and Sikkema each with six. Tanasha Cooksey finished with a game-high three total blocks while Lorena ended with two for the match.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, October 29th when they travel to face St. Thomas University for the second time this season at 2 p.m. in Miami Gardens, Florida.
